Port User Group meeting highlighted sustainable growth and investment
Date published: May 15, 2026

The latest Port User Group meeting brought together stakeholders from across the maritime, business, environmental and community sectors to discuss major developments shaping the future of the Port of Newhaven. The meeting highlighted continued progress across sustainability, infrastructure, safety, renewable energy and economic growth initiatives.
Updated Port Master Plan sets direction for growth
The Port of Newhaven confirmed that its strategic Master Plan was refreshed in August 2024 following consultation with around 60 stakeholders. The updated plan outlines the port’s long-term vision for sustainable growth, supporting both commercial operations and the wider regional economy.
The revised plan reflects changing industry demands, environmental priorities and opportunities linked to renewable energy and logistics expansion.
Decarbonisation and sustainable ferry operations
A significant focus of discussions centred on the decarbonisation of ferry operations and wider port activities. Ongoing feasibility studies are exploring options including:
- Shore power infrastructure for vessels
- Alternative low-carbon fuels
- Renewable energy integration
- Future electrification opportunities
The port is working collaboratively with industry partners, academic institutions and energy specialists to identify practical pathways towards achieving net zero ambitions.
Expansion plans for Area E1 progressing
Progress continues on the proposed Area E1 development site, a four-hectare area identified for future port expansion. Pre-planning work is now underway, with the site expected to support opportunities in:
- Renewable energy projects
- Logistics and freight operations
- Maritime-related industrial uses
The development is viewed as an important opportunity to strengthen Newhaven’s role as a key south coast commercial and energy hub.
Cruise Ship operations return to Newhaven

The meeting also celebrated the return of cruise ship activity to the port, with Newhaven welcoming its first cruise vessel in 13 years.
To support future growth in this sector, development plans for the East Quay continue, aiming to create a flexible multi-user facility capable of handling both cargo and cruise operations. The port hopes this investment will help attract additional cruise calls in coming years and bring increased visitor spending into the local economy.
Strong safety performance across Marine Operations
Marine incident reports presented at the meeting showed a continued reduction in reported incidents across harbour operations. Improvements have been credited to enhanced safety culture initiatives, better reporting systems and ongoing operational reviews.
Port representatives emphasised that maintaining high safety standards remains a core operational priority.
Rampion Wind Farm continues to exceed expectations
Updates from the Rampion offshore wind farm highlighted continued strong operational performance, with the project exceeding generation targets.
The project also continues to support:
- Apprenticeship and skills programmes
- Local supply chain opportunities
- Educational and stakeholder engagement initiatives
Future stakeholder tours and community engagement activities are also being explored
Collaboration supporting community and economic development
The port reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with local authorities, schools, colleges and business organisations to support regional economic growth and skills development.
Partnership initiatives continue to focus on:
- Employment opportunities
- Maritime education and apprenticeships
- Community engagement
- Business collaboration across the region
Continued investment in infrastructure and environmental projects

The meeting heard updates on several ongoing infrastructure and environmental initiatives, including:
- EV charging infrastructure
- Renewable energy investment
- Wind, wave and tidal energy feasibility studies
- Harbour maintenance and dredging works
These projects form part of the port’s broader strategy to modernise operations while supporting environmental sustainability goals.
Marina and harbour improvements underway
Ongoing improvements across the harbour and marina facilities were also discussed, including new marina infrastructure and upgrades supporting both commercial fishing and leisure marine users.
The port noted that these investments are designed to enhance operational resilience while improving facilities for a wide range of harbour users.
Broad stakeholder engagement remains central
The Port of Newhaven confirmed it now maintains active engagement with 48 organisations and 106 individual stakeholders, ensuring broad consultation and ongoing dialogue as projects and developments progress.
The User Group continues to play an important role in sharing updates, gathering feedback and supporting collaboration across the maritime and local business communities.
