Chief Executive Officer – Newhaven Port – Part-time
Start date: 1st March 2027
Salary: Negotiable
Hours: Approximately 2.5 days per week TBC during selection process
Newhaven Port is a strategically located commercial port on the south coast, serving ferry, freight and marine markets and supporting regional trade and economic activity. Privately owned and operating in a competitive maritime environment, the port is entering a new phase focused on sustainable commercial growth, asset optimisation and long‑term resilience.
We are seeking an experienced and commercially driven individual for the position of Chief Executive Officer to lead Newhaven Port into its next chapter.
The Role
As CEO, you will have full responsibility for the strategic leadership, commercial performance and safe operation of the port. Reporting to the Board, you will deliver sustainable growth, strong financial results and regulatory compliance, while positioning Newhaven Port as a competitive, future‑ready maritime business. The role will be on a part-time basis as specified in the employment contract following discussions with shortlisted candidates and subject to the operational requirements of the role.
This model is well-suited to an experienced professional who may hold portfolio responsibilities, or who is seeking a senior role offering flexibility alongside meaningful responsibility and the opportunity to make a significant contribution to the Port.
You will:
- Set and deliver the port’s commercial and strategic direction
- Lead revenue growth across ferry, freight, marine services, property and ancillary income streams
- Hold full P&L accountability and lead capital investment planning
- Ensure operational excellence, safety and statutory harbour compliance
- Build strong relationships with customers, partners, regulators and stakeholders
- Lead and develop a high‑performing management team
The Person
We are looking for a credible, resilient and commercially astute leader with:
- Senior executive leadership experience in either: ports, maritime, logistics, infrastructure, commerce, finance or a similarly regulated sector
- A strong track record of delivering commercial growth and financial performance
- Experience reporting to Boards and working with stakeholders
- An understanding of safety‑critical operations and regulatory environments
- Excellent leadership, negotiation and stakeholder‑management skills
- Significant senior leadership experience within a corporate environment, including responsibility for commercial and financial performance, together with a suitable business or professional qualification.
