Pilot Boat Coxswain

Location: Newhaven Port, East Sussex

Starting Salary: Up to £37,000 depending on experience and qualifications, progressively increasing to £45,000, over two years based on performance and additional qualifications gained. 

Newhaven Port & Properties Ltd is the Statutory and Competent Harbour Authority for the Port of Newhaven, which is bounded by the South Downs National Park. We are responsible for ensuring the port remains safe and operational for commercial, fishing, and leisure activities. As a key cross-channel ferry port, Newhaven connects Sussex with Dieppe, France, and currently handles vessels up to 145m in length. 

We are seeking a dedicated and capable Pilot Boat Coxswain to support the Marine Department in the day-to-day operations of the port. This role includes: 

  • Operating and maintaining the pilot boat, workboat and survey boat. 
  • Assist in Hydrographic Surveys, riverbed sampling and Harbour Surveys. 
  • Carrying out harbour patrols. 
  • Routine maintenance/inspection of marine equipment including lifejackets, lifebuoys and signage. 
  • Ensure compliance with harbour operating procedures and legislation. 
  • Assisting when needed to aid the maintenance teams and contractors servicing port assets. 
  • Provide boat training and guidance to staff. 
Work Pattern

The role is based on a 4 days on / 4 days off shift pattern, but the nature of this responsible role requires flexibility, including: 

  • Night shifts 
  • Weekend and bank holiday work 
  • On-call duties and ad-hoc operational commitment 
Requirements 
  • Minimum qualification: Advanced Powerboat (Commercial Endorsement) 
  • Desirable: Yachtmaster Offshore (Commercial Endorsement) 
  • Considered: Power Boat Level 2 (Commercial Endorsement) with relevant experience in marine operations.

Important:
