Harbour Emergency & Waste Plans

Everything you need to know about how we manage waste at the Port and how we respond in the event of an oil spill or other emergency.

Newhaven Harbour Emergency Plan

Newhaven Port and Properties, as the Statutory Harbour Authority of Newhaven Port are Category 2 responders under the Civil Contingencies Act 2004. As part of their duties under this act, NPP are required to have an Emergency Plan. This plan is shared with key stakeholders and the Sussex Resilience Forum.

Please note, the existence of this plan does not absolve other Port users and businesses of their duty to prepare for emergencies.

Newhaven Harbour Oil Spill Contingency Plan

An oil spill has the potential to damage local marine ecosystems, disrupt shipping operations, and impact our wider community.

In the unlikely event of one happening, how we’ll respond is set out in our Newhaven Harbour Oil Spill Contingency Plan.

The plan is a legal requirement and receives approval from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency every five years. Newhaven’s Harbour Master reviews and updates the plan annually, incorporating lessons learned from exercises and incidents.

Newhaven Port Waste Management Plan

How we deal with waste is critical for both safety and environmental protection at the Port. Our Waste Management Plan encourages recycling wherever possible.

Our jurisdiction extends from the north of North Quay No.5 berth to approximately 2 miles south of the harbour entrance. Any discharge of waste into waters of the harbour is strictly prohibited by international legislation. This applies to garbage, sewage, oil and any other form of polluting material.

Individual terminals/berths and marinas/moorings remain responsible for their own waste management system.
