Newhaven Stage 21: Works update 29 October, 2025

Date published: October 29, 2025

Fishing Stages update on the work as of 29 October, 2025.

We’re pleased to report that excellent progress has been made since our last update.
The upper river wall sheet piles have been fully installed, and the revetment area has been cleared of concrete, rubble and debris — opening up the area ready for construction of the new jetty.

Over recent weeks, our team has focused on the installation of the front combi-wall, a structure formed of large tubular steel piles and steel sheet piles that will retain the riverbank and create the front face of the new fishing jetty.

Despite periods of poor weather, 28 tubular piles have now been successfully installed, forming the front combi-wall and both wing walls. We expect to complete the remaining tubular piles within the coming days.

Next phase of works

Later this week, we will carry out some adjustment and maintenance of the piling frame and equipment in preparation for the installation of the steel sheet piles that fit between the tubular piles. These will complete the combi-wall and form a continuous structure along the river edge.

We anticipate that sheet piling will begin around Thursday, subject to weather conditions.
Forecasts currently indicate high winds on Friday and Saturday, which may temporarily pause piling operations for safety reasons. Work will resume as soon as conditions allow.

Once piling is complete, works will move on to construction of the reinforced concrete capping beam and installation of the steel framework that will support the jetty deck.

All piling activities are being undertaken from our Octopus jack-up barge, which remains positioned in the river for the duration of this phase.

Working hours

Work will continue to take place Monday to Saturday inclusive, with Sundays remaining a quiet day. All piling activities will be carefully managed to minimise disruption.

Environmental monitoring

As part of our commitment to the local community and the environment, noise and vibration levels will continue to be monitored throughout the works in accordance with our approved environmental management plan and Section 61 agreement.

Did you know?

Once complete, the new jetty will provide safe mooring and improved facilities for local fishing vessels, helping to sustain Newhaven’s long fishing tradition. The structure has been designed for a 50-year design life, using durable marine-grade steel and sustainably sourced timber decking. These improvements will allow vessels to operate across a wider range of tides, supporting the local fishing industry for decades to come.
