Children from Harbour Primary School enjoyed a special behind-the-scenes visit to Newhaven Port this week, where they viewed the historic oak timbers recently lifted from the old fishing stages on the West Quay.

The timbers—believed to be more than 200 years old—are being carefully removed and replaced as part of the Fishing Stage 21 project. Once restored, the oak will be considered for a new memorial to the Newhaven Fishing Fleet, planned for installation by Herbosch-Kiere when the new fishing stage opens next spring.

During their visit, pupils and teachers were given a guided tour of the Port’s Border Control Point by Gary Milan, Safety, Health, Environment & Operations Manager at Newhaven Port & Properties. The team also demonstrated some of the specialist equipment used daily by the port team, giving the children a fascinating insight into modern port operations.
