Farewell to the RoRo2 pontoon part of Newhaven’s maritime history

Today saw the departure of the RoRo2 pontoon from Newhaven Port following the dismantling of the Bailey Bridge earlier this year. The pontoon served as a linkspan access for many ferries over the years, with the last departure being the SuperSeaCat One in early October 2004. Since then it has been used for the mooring of the ports vessels.

The RoRo2 pontoon is being towed by ML Dredging workboat the Big Ron on its way to Portsmouth where it will be dismantled for disposal. 

It’s removal provides additional waterfront capacity and improved operational flexibility as Newhaven Port opens up East Sussex to the smaller cruise ships and excursions. Tomorrow, the PS Waverley will steam in and a full compliment of passengers will board for a steam trip to the Isle of Wight.
