CCTV now installed on Newhaven breakwater due to arson, waste and incidents
Date published: May 7, 2026
Following a number of incidents and an arson attack earlier this year, Newhaven Port and Properties has had to further improve the access security to the breakwater.
As well as the piece of equipment that was set on fire, Port staff have had to deal with the aftermath of people breaking on to the Breakwater and leaving behind piles of human excrement, hundreds of plastic and glass bottles, lengths of discarded fishing line (some with hooks and bait still attached), punctured air beds , broken tents , and various other types of refuse.

The Port undertakes regular checks on the Breakwater and removes as much of the waste in order that it does not enter the water or cause harm to wildlife. However, with increased numbers of trespassers and more expected through the summer months, the Port has added further strengthening to the access to the breakwater. A new CCTV system is also being installed on the Breakwater, to capture and record the actions of anyone attempting to gain entry to the Breakwater. This CCTV footage will be forwarded to the Police and will be used as evidence for any future prosecutions.
