Our purpose is to manage Newhaven Port in a way that benefits the wider Newhaven community, all users of the port, and the local environment. That includes developing a vision for the next twenty years that will help the port and its communities prosper.
We serve as the Statutory Harbour Authority for the Newhaven Port. This means we’re responsible for:
Making sure vessels can navigate the harbour safely, including the ferry and swing bridge operations, and managing the dredging of the harbour.
Making sure local bylaws and national maritime regulations are enforced.
Making sure harbour facilities are well maintained and modernised, including docks, piers, and the ferry terminal.
Looking after our marine environment and ecosystems by managing waste, preventing pollution, supporting the Rampion wind farm, and leading on renewable energy projects of our own.
Supporting trade and movement of cargo and passengers and supporting all port-related business. We also act as a landlord to a variety of local businesses, from advanced manufacturing to boatbuilders and the fishing industry.
There are about 40 businesses operating from the port.
Over 2,000,000 tonnes of cargo is shipped to and from the port each year.
Over 250,000 passengers travel on the ferry each year.
The port is at the heart of the community in Newhaven and we’re working to support industries that create jobs and enhance the town’s marine identity.
A new £50m Fish Landing Stage is being constructed to replace the existing stages. The works are scheduled for completion in the winter of 2025/26.
The project is being delivered by Newhaven Port & Properties Ltd., funded by UK Government with grant funding secured by Lewes District Council.
