A Joint Statement by James MacCleary MP and Newhaven Port & Properties Ltd

Date published: July 17, 2026

With the recent hot weather and the summer holidays approaching, we recognise that many people in Newhaven are frustrated at being unable to access West Beach, and there remains strong local feeling about its future.

The beach is closed because of the risks associated with its location within an operational harbour and navigational channel, and because there is no safe public access.

James MacCleary MP recognises these safety concerns and joins Newhaven Port & Properties Ltd in urging people not to attempt to gain access unlawfully. The safety of local residents, visitors and those working in and around the port must remain the priority.

Everyone should treat port staff with respect. Port employees are carrying out their duties to ensure the safe operation of the harbour, which supports local jobs and the wider local economy.

Newhaven Port & Properties Ltd has committed to continuing dialogue with stakeholders and the local community regarding the future of West Beach and any opportunities compatible with their statutory harbour responsibilities and navigational risk assessments that may arise to improve access and use in a safe and sustainable way.

We jointly urge people not to enter restricted areas of West Beach and to respect the safety measures that remain in place.
