Milestone reached in construction work

Piling work on the new Fishing Stages to finish soon marking a milestone in the project.

Herbosch-Kiere Marine are pleased to confirm that the front combi-wall and both wing walls are now complete, and the team is installing the tubular piles which will support the new fishing stage deck.

We anticipate all piling works will be completed within the next week or two.  This will be a major and exciting milestone for the project and will also mark the end of the noisiest construction activities associated with the works.

Once piling is complete, the next phase of the project will involve:

  • Installation of the structural steelwork, including the mid-level beams between the tubular piles.
  • Installation of the primary and secondary steelwork that will support the new fishing stage deck.

The first batch of steelwork is due to leave Poland shortly, where it has been fabricated. It will be delivered by road to the East Quay and then transported by boat across the port to the work site on the West Quay.  This phase is due to start in early December.

Facts at a glance:

  • The new front combi-wall is formed of 33 large tubular piles, installed from a jack-up barge working in the harbour.
  • A further 22 tubular piles are being installed to support the new fishing stage deck, creating a much more robust structure than the old jetty.
  • The main structural steelwork, fabricated in Poland, will be brought by lorry to the East Quay before being transported by boat across the harbour to the West Quay work site.
  • The new concrete pontoons, which will rise and fall with the tide and provide a mooring platform for the fishing boats, are essentially large concrete tubs that have been constructed in Ireland and are now ready for delivery to Newhaven.
