Newhaven Port Carbon Emissions Report 2022–2024
Date published: November 13, 2025
Newhaven Port has published its latest Carbon Emissions Report, covering the three-year period from 2022 to 2024. This report forms part of our long-term commitment to reducing environmental impact and charting a clear, measurable course toward net zero. You can download the full report at the end of this article.
Charting the Course to Net Zero
Over the past three years, Newhaven Port has taken significant steps to better understand, measure, and reduce its carbon footprint. Since 2022, our emissions have been independently audited each year to ensure accuracy and transparency.
These audits assess emissions across the internationally recognised three Scopes of greenhouse gas reporting:
- Scope 1: Direct emissions from fuel used in vehicles and equipment.
- Scope 2: Indirect emissions from the electricity we purchase and use.
- Scope 3: Selected upstream emissions, specifically business travel and staff commuting, with plans to expand reporting to more areas of the supply chain in future years.
This structured approach ensures we are tracking emissions comprehensively and consistently as we progress toward our sustainability goals.
Our Methodology
Emissions are reported in tCO₂e (tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent), which accounts for CO₂, methane, and nitrous oxide, making it possible to compare and aggregate the global warming impact of different greenhouse gases.
From 2023 onwards, we adopted the market-based approach for electricity emissions, reflecting our use of 100% renewable energy. Under this system, electricity sourced from zero-emissions tariffs and on-site solar PV arrays counts as zero Scope 2 emissions.
The report covers electricity consumption across key buildings at the Port, including:
- Ferry terminal
- Freight shed
- Port Administration Office
- Security huts
- Pumping station
Three-year Emissions Overview
The data shows a clear downward trend in total emissions:
- 2022 total: 145.61 tCO₂e
- 2023 total: 94.92 tCO₂e
- 2024 total: 78.00 tCO₂e
This represents a 46% reduction in total emissions over three years, an achievement reflecting both operational improvements and strategic investments.
What’s driving the reduction?
The Port’s decarbonisation progress is rooted in a series of targeted actions:
100% Renewable Electricity
We now operate on a zero-emissions electricity tariff and have installed solar panels across key buildings, including East Quay Sheds 5 & 6, the Ferry Terminal, and the Freight Shed.
Cleaner Vehicles and Equipment
- 2023: Transition to electric forklift trucks
- 2024: Switch to HVO fuel for the vehicle fleet—reducing emissions by up to 90% compared to conventional diesel
Staff Travel
Commuting emissions remain a focus area, and the Port is exploring new incentives to support lower-carbon travel choices.
Looking Ahead
The Port is pursuing an ambitious roadmap for continued carbon reduction. Planned priorities include:
- Further switching of diesel vehicles to HVO where feasible
- Ongoing investment in on-site renewable generation
- Expanding vehicle electrification across operations
- Incentivising lower-carbon staff commuting options
The timeline outlined in the report (pages 10–11) sets out our pathway not only to net zero but to wider sustainability leadership, aligning strongly with regional and national goals.
Conclusion
The 46% reduction in total emissions from 2022 to 2024 reflects a sustained and successful effort to reduce operational carbon impacts while laying solid foundations for long-term decarbonisation. Newhaven Port remains committed to continuous improvement, transparent reporting, and meaningful climate action.
