Newhaven Stage 21: Fishing Jetty Replacement Project
Date published: August 12, 2025
As part of the Newhaven Fishing Stage 21 project, replacing fishing stages 10 & 11, with a new, modern fishing stage, complete with an access walkway and pontoon system. The project is designed to enhance safety, usability, and efficiency for our hardworking local fishing community and to secure the future of Newhaven’s fishing industry.
The new stages

Once the old stages have been demolished, the new steel jetty will be constructed with an access walkway, with a pontoon system on the end connected by a gangway.
Two small cranes will be mounted on the end of the jetty to assist fishmen unloading their cargo. The side view and the view from the sea, can be seen below.
The new jetty has been designed to provide a safe, efficient and more accessible working environment for local fishermen and will significantly improve their daily operations and vessel access.
The vessels: Octopus, Stour and Valk

The main work vessel involved with the project are the Octopus, a jack-up barge with a 150-tonne crawler crane. This provides a stable platform for the crane to lift out the old structures and will be used later for the construction of the new jetty. It does this using four long 38m spud poles on its corners which can move downwards to the seabed, providing a stable base.
The Stour is a multi-purpose vessel that will be used to carry out the general lifting operations and to transport materials between the West and East Quays. Due to its nature, it is often referred to as Multi-Cat.

The Valk is a flat top barge that is used to transport materials to and from the East Quay.
The project is being undertaken by Herbosch-Kiere Marine Contractors on behalf of Newhaven Port & Properties Ltd. It is an important investment in Newhaven’s waterfront infrastructure that has been made possible by UK Government funding.
