Major improvements underway for West Quay Fishing Stages

Arrival of the Octopus creates interest throughout the port
We’re pleased to announce that work has started on the Fishing Stages Replacement Project at West Quay, Newhaven. This vital infrastructure upgrade will replace the existing fishing stages 10 and 11 with a new, modern fishing stage, complete with an access walkway and pontoon system. The project is designed to enhance safety, usability, and efficiency for our hardworking local fishing community and to secure the future of Newhaven’s fishing industry.

What to expect on site
Site setup is underway and will include the installation of welfare cabins, safety fencing, and essential construction equipment. Once underway, the main works will generally operate between 7:00am and 7:00pm, seven days a week, with some construction activities scheduled around tidal movements to accommodate the marine environment.

Maintaining community access and safety
Throughout the project, the West Quay footpath will remain open, ensuring continued public access. However, a small section alongside the active work zone will be safely barriered off. Importantly, there are no planned disruptions to local roads or port access during this phase.

Adding long-term value for the community
Beyond the physical improvements, the project will also include meaningful community initiatives. Planned activities include beach clean events and a legacy project repurposing timber from the old stages. These reclaimed materials will be transformed into public seating or a heritage feature, ensuring that the past is honoured while creating sustainable, social value for the future.
Partnership and funding
This transformational project is being delivered by Newhaven Port & Properties, with funding provided by the UK Government. The funding was successfully secured by Lewes District Council, highlighting the shared commitment to supporting Newhaven’s fishing industry and strengthening its maritime infrastructure.
We’ll continue to keep the community updated as work progresses. Stay tuned for more announcements and opportunities to get involved.
